J Dilla was one of the most iconic and influential hip-hop producers in the world. He worked with A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Common and more. His influence can be felt across hip hop and modern jazz, with Kamasi Washington citing him as a major inspiration alongside Mingus and Coltrane.

For this show, the Abstract Orchestra perform a range of works from his back catalogue.

The Abstract Orchestra is a 16-piece ensemble led by Haggis Horns saxophonist Rob Mitchell keeping alive the culture of musicians playing live hip-hop. Inspired by the orchestral arrangements by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson of the work of J Dilla, the band strives to merge great musical arrangements with incredible hip-hop from across the decades to create an amazing live experience that truly is jaw dropping. The group work closely with guest MC’s, creating exciting new arrangements of their work and co-writing new music that pushes the envelope of hip-hop and jazz.

The band comprises of a pool of world class musicians who have performed, recorded and toured with the likes of The Haggis Horns, Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamirqoquai, Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra, Submotion Orchestra, The New Mastersounds, Amy Winehouse, The Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band, Martha Reeves, Candi Staton and many, many more.
