The Helm is a prominent hilltop SE of Kendal. It has spectacular views and, perhaps not surprisingly, was a “hillfort” – and half of it is now owned and managed by Friends of the Lake District. There is an opportunity to stop at the Station Inn on the way back and buy Sunday lunch. Booking in advance is advised for lunch; we expect to be there for 12.30pm. Call Station Inn on 01539 724094. The guide will describe various “-ologies” to do with The Helm e.g. geology, ecology and archaeology.
