This epic, historical fantasy anime film is written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Studio Ghibli and produced by Toshio Suzuki.
Set in the late Miromachi period (1336-1573) of Japan Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece depicts the clash between the natural world and its old gods and the rise of humans and the beginnings of modern civilisation. It shows three elements of the Japanese psyche warring for supremacy in an epic ecological fable of stirring mythic power.
A critical and commercial success Princess Mononoke was the highest grossing film of all time in Japan until Titanic floated by later that year. It has more than stood the test of time becoming one of Studio Ghibli’s most revered film. On a special visit to the UK Ken Niimura will introduce this film and reveal why he thinks it has a special place in the Studio Ghibli canon.
