Festivals DAVE MCKEAN : BLACK DOG – THE DREAMS OF PAUL NASH

Sunday 16th Oct 1.30-2.30pm The Theatre, BAC

Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash is a multimedia performance and new graphic novel by illustrator, comic artist, filmmaker and musician Dave McKean. McKean explores the work of Paul Nash, one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century, whose First World War experiences inspired him to create paintings of disturbing and lasting power.

Dave will perform live alongside musicians/collaborators Clare Haythornthwaite and Matthew Sharp. This extraordinary piece premiered earlier this year in Kendal and in Amiens, France to great critical acclaim. The original graphic novel is launched at the festival, published by Dark Horse.
“Comics are a vital form in their own right. This is a unique medium. I couldn’t have made Black Dog in any other medium. I want to hear Nash’s voice in my head. I want the images to quote from still imagery, and NOT to move. You, the reader, have to create that illusion when necessary. Scale of image changes, you are in charge of time. These are all important facets of what makes comics such a powerful and intimate medium”. Dave McKean

Black Dog – `the Dreams of Paul Nash is co-commissioned by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, On a Marche sur la Bulle and 14-18 NOW:WW1 Centenary Art Commissions, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England and by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
