The alter-ego of Alfred Wainwright, the famous Lakeland Guidebook writer and creator of the famous Coast to Coast walk (voted the 2nd most favourite walk in the world), is presenting his talk to the festival on the Friday evening.

John Burland, the founder of the Wainwright Society, has written and devised a dramatic presentation of the life and works of AW. This was first presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature festival on Thursday 15 October 2009 when over 130 people attended the event. Since then John has given the talk over forty times to various groups throughout the north of England.

In the presentation, John takes the audience on a journey through AW’s life from his humble upbringing in Blackburn through his life-changing visit to the Lake District in 1930 and then his eventual move to Kendal in 1940 and the fifteen years spent writing the outstanding Pictorial Guides to the Lake District between 1952 and 1967. It also includes a look at the more passionate side of the man with his surreptitious love affair in the mid ‘60’s. The presentation concludes with his final journey “in a little box” to the summit of Haystacks where his ashes were scattered in 1991.
As a result of these talks, many thousands of pounds have been raised for various cancer charities and also refugee & children’s charities abroad.

If you are a lover of The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales or walking in general, this is an evening not to be missed!
